Negotiating is one of the MOST important skills you can have in life, yet so many people are uncomfortable with it.
To be a successful property investor you will need to overcome the discomfort you may feel when you negotiate.
I often say to people, if you don’t think you’re any good at negotiating, talk to a child or teenager and they’ll certainly teach you a thing or two
You can practise your negotiation skills every day.
Try this…next time you go to a hardware store or you’re doing the shopping ask the person at the checkout “Is that the best price you can do”, then pause and wait for their reaction.
Sometimes they’ll come straight back and say “no, we can probably give you a discount”. Other times they’ll give you a bewildered look.
Either way, have fun with it. Remember, you have nothing to lose.
My children used to get very embarassed when they came shopping with me and I played this little game, but now they do it too.
This simple exercise can help you build the confidence you need to be a hard bargainer in real estate.
However, negotiation skills are not just important in real estate, they are also important in everyday life. You need them when you want to be considered for a pay rise, when you and your partner need to reach a compromise, when you’re buying a new car, the list goes on.
Next time you’re in a situation where you need to negotiate something, stop and think about how you will approach the situation. Then afterwards, take a moment to sit back and think about how the situation unfolded and how you can learn from it.
